Marketing for small businesses, in the right order
Most small businesses don't need more marketing. They need the basics done properly, in the order that brings customers fastest, at a price that makes sense for a business your size.
Why most small business marketing doesn't pay off
When owners tell me "marketing didn't work for us", it's almost always one of these four things, not the channel itself.
Ads pointing to a weak website
Paying for clicks that land on a slow page with no prices and a tiny phone number. The ad gets the visit; the website loses it. Every dollar of ad budget is multiplied, or wasted, by the page it sends people to.
Invisible on Google Maps
For a local business, the map results above the websites get most of the attention for "near me" searches. A half-finished Google Business Profile with 6 reviews loses to the shop down the road with 140, even if your work is better.
Doing everything a little
Posting on four platforms, a newsletter, a TikTok, a blog nobody reads. Small teams get better results from two channels done well than from six done when there's time.
Paying for things you can't measure
Retainers with vague reports full of "impressions" and "reach". If you can't connect what you pay to calls, bookings or orders, you can't tell whether to keep paying.
Four steps, each one paying for the next
This is the order I use with every client. You can stop after any step and still have something that works on its own.
- A website that turns visitors into callsFast on a phone, prices or price ranges shown, click-to-call and booking buttons on every screen, your real photos, and the pages Google needs to understand what you do and where. Everything else you do later sends people here, so it comes first. Website design.
- Google Business Profile, set up properlyRight primary category, every service listed, real photos, hours, service area, and the website and booking links connected. This is free traffic from people already searching for what you sell. Google Business Profile.
- A habit of collecting reviewsA direct review link, a QR card at the counter and a short text after each job. Reviews move you up in the map results and they're what people read before they call. Ten new honest reviews usually beat any amount of posting.
- Paid ads, once the first three are in placeFacebook and Instagram ads aimed at people near you, sending them to a page built for one offer. Ads work far better now because steps 1โ3 catch and convince the people they bring in. Facebook & Instagram ads.

Small business marketing questions
How much should a small business spend on marketing?
There's no single right number, but a useful way to think about it: first pay once for the things that keep working (website, Google profile, review system), then spend monthly only on what you can measure, like ads tied to calls or bookings. Many local businesses start with a one-time setup of a few hundred dollars and add a monthly ad budget once the basics convert.
Should I start with SEO or ads?
For a local business, start with your website and Google Business Profile, because they cost little to maintain and keep bringing people in. Ads are faster but stop the day you stop paying. The full comparison is in my guide on SEO vs SEM vs PPC.
Do I need to be on every social media platform?
No. Pick the one or two where your customers already are. For most local service businesses that's Facebook and Instagram, plus your Google profile, which works a lot like a social profile for people searching nearby.
Can you guarantee results?
No honest marketer can guarantee rankings or a number of customers, because Google, Meta and your customers decide those. What I do guarantee: you see your website before paying, the price is fixed, and you own everything I set up.
Do you work with businesses outside Bangladesh?
Yes. I work with businesses in the US, UK, Canada and Australia. Everything is done remotely over WhatsApp and email, and I work around your time zone for calls.
