What I found
- All 5 sites I could check have a tap-to-call link at the top, show a license number and use business schema. The basics are solid.
- Of the 4 sites I could speed test, 3 took over 13 seconds for the main content to show on a simulated phone.
- One homepage weighed about 18 MB and moved around a lot while loading, the kind of jump that makes people tap the wrong thing.
- The fastest site wasn't the lightest. It got the important content on screen quickly.
How I checked
I picked 8 local plumbing company websites that show up when you search Google for plumbers in Phoenix. On 5 November 2026 I ran each through:
- A Lighthouse mobile test (version 12.2.1, Google's free open-source speed tool), simulating a mid-range phone on a slow 4G connection.
- A code check of the page: tap-to-call links, headings, business schema, booking options, license details.
Three sites couldn't be checked fairly and are left out: one blocked automated visitors, one wouldn't connect to the test tools, and one loads all its content with scripts, so a code check sees an empty page. A fourth allowed the code check but blocked the speed test. That leaves 5 sites with a code check and 4 with a speed score.
One test per site, on one day. Scores move a few points between runs, and visitors on fast Wi-Fi will see faster pages. Every site got the same test, so the comparison holds. Names are hidden because this is about patterns, not calling anyone out.
The scorecard
| Site | Mobile score | Main content shows | Page size | Call link at top | Book online |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company A | 57 | 13.3 s | 3.2 MB | Yes | No |
| Company B | 48 | 14.2 s | 4.1 MB | Yes | Yes |
| Company C | 17 | 26.5 s | 18.2 MB | Yes | Yes |
| Company D | Blocked | – | – | Yes | No |
| Company E | 88 | 2.5 s | 4.3 MB | Yes | Yes |
"Main content shows" is Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how long until the biggest thing on screen appears. Google calls 2.5 seconds or less good. "Blocked" means the site refused the speed test tool.
What's going wrong
1. Slow on a phone, even for established companies
These look like well-run businesses with proper websites. Still, three of the four speed-tested homepages took 13 to 27 seconds for the main content to appear on a simulated slow connection. Someone with water on the floor is going to call whoever loads first.
2. A page that moves while it loads
Company C scored 17 out of 100 and had a layout shift score of 0.59. Google treats anything above 0.25 as poor. In plain terms: buttons and text jump around while the page loads, so people tap the wrong thing or lose their place. It's usually caused by images, banners or pop-ups without a reserved space. The same page was about 18 MB and kept the phone's processor busy for over half a second, which makes scrolling feel sticky.
3. Too many scripts
Every site I checked loads 24 or more scripts on the homepage; Company C loads about 80. Chat widgets, review widgets, tracking pixels and booking tools each add a little. Together they slow the page and compete with the content people came for.
4. Small things that add up
- Company A has two main headlines (H1) and a 2025 copyright line, small signs a site isn't being looked after.
- Companies A and D don't offer online booking. Plenty of plumbing jobs aren't emergencies (water heater quotes, fixture installs), and some customers prefer to book without calling.
What the best one does
Company E scored 88, with main content showing in about 2.5 seconds, right on Google's "good" line. Interestingly, it isn't the lightest page: it's about 4.3 MB. Its first text and main content appeared within a fraction of a second of each other, which usually means the page is set up to show the important content before the extras. It also has online booking, a license number, one clear headline and tap-to-call at the top.
Its one visible gap: a 2024 copyright line in the footer. A small fix, but it's the kind of detail that makes a visitor wonder if anyone's home.
Fix-first list for plumbers
- Test your homepage with Google PageSpeed Insights on mobile, two or three times.
- Load what matters first: headline, phone button and one hero image. Delay chat, reviews and other widgets until after the page shows.
- Reserve space for images and banners so the page doesn't jump while loading.
- Remove scripts you don't use, especially old tracking pixels and duplicate tools.
- Add online booking for non-urgent jobs and quotes.
- Keep it current: copyright year, offers, hours, photos of your real team and vans.
