Short answer
- Good copy is specific: it names the customer, the result, the place and the next step.
- The fastest wins are usually the headline, the call to action and the first line of each service.
- Every example below is written by me for illustration. They're not from real clients, but each one follows the same rules I use on real projects.
Five rules behind every example
- Say who it's for. "For busy parents in Tampa" beats "for everyone".
- Lead with the outcome, not the process. People buy "a lawn you don't have to think about", not "weekly mowing services".
- Replace adjectives with proof. "High quality" means nothing. "Same-day appointments" or "licensed and insured since 2016" means something.
- Remove the fear. Answer the worry before it's asked: price, time, mess, commitment.
- One clear next step. Tell people exactly what to tap and what happens after.
Homepage headlines
Your headline has one job: tell a stranger, in a few seconds, that they're in the right place.
| Business | Before | After |
|---|---|---|
| Plumber | "Welcome to Smith Plumbing" | "Leaking pipe? A licensed plumber at your door in Austin today." |
| Barbershop | "Quality cuts, great vibes" | "Sharp fades in 30 minutes. Book online or walk in before 6." |
| Bakery | "Passionate about baking" | "Custom birthday cakes in 48 hours, baked fresh in Dearborn." |
| Accountant | "Your trusted financial partner" | "Small business taxes done right, with a fixed price before we start." |
Why the "after" works: each one names the problem or outcome, the place and something concrete (time, price, speed). "Welcome to" wastes the most valuable line on the page.
Service descriptions
Most service lists are a row of nouns. A good service description answers three questions: what's included, who it suits and what it costs, or at least where the price starts.
Example: a cleaning company
Before: "We offer residential cleaning services tailored to your needs."
After: "Deep clean for move-outs and first visits: kitchen, bathrooms, inside the fridge and oven, baseboards. Most 2-bedroom homes take about 4 hours and start from $180. You'll get a fixed quote before we book."
Example: a dog groomer
Before: "Professional grooming for all breeds."
After: "Full groom for small and medium dogs: bath, cut, nails and ears. First visit? We go slower and send you a photo when your dog is ready for pickup."
Calls to action
A button that says "Submit" or "Learn more" asks people to do work without saying what they get. Name the result and lower the risk.
| Weak | Stronger | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Contact us | Get a free quote in 24 hours | Says what happens and when |
| Submit | Send my booking request | Feels like progress, not paperwork |
| Learn more | See prices and packages | Answers the real question |
| Sign up | Claim my free 7-day pass | Names the benefit and the cost (free) |
Ad copy
Ads have even less room, so every word must earn its place. Here is one offer written three ways for a mobile car detailer:
- Generic: "Professional car detailing. Call today!"
- Specific: "We come to your driveway. Interior and exterior detail from $149."
- Specific + reason to act: "We come to your driveway. Interior and exterior detail from $149. 8 spots left this week."
The third version only works if the limit is true. Fake urgency gets noticed quickly, and it erodes trust. For more on ads, see Facebook ads cost and google ads examples.
Google Business Profile descriptions
Your profile description is often the first thing people read on Google Maps. Google's guidelines say it should describe your business, not be stuffed with links, promotions or keyword lists, so write it for people.
Before: "Best roofing company roofer roof repair roof replacement near me cheap roofing."
After: "Family-run roofing company serving the Charlotte area since 2012. We repair leaks, replace storm-damaged roofs and install gutters. Every job gets a written quote and photos of the work before we leave."
Setting up the rest of your profile properly is covered on my Google Business Profile page.
Edit your own copy in 15 minutes
- Open your homepage on your phone. Read only the first screen. Does a stranger know what you do, where and how to contact you?
- Circle every adjective ("quality", "trusted", "best"). Replace each with a fact or delete it.
- Find every "we" sentence and rewrite one in three as a "you" sentence.
- Rename every button so it says what the person gets.
- Add one price, one timeline or one guarantee you can actually keep.
If you'd rather hand it off, I write website and service page copy as part of Content & website copywriting, and every Website design project includes copy edits for the main pages.
